with Lauren Moten, Georgetown University Assistant Coach
Get a field-side seat as Ricky Fried presents a typical Georgetown practice with an emphasis on defense. This Georgetown practice covers the following:
- Stick work
- Attack and Defense Split
- Man down 3v2 building to 4v3 then 5v4
- Coma Defensive Drill
- 3v3 and 7v7
The DVD begins with partner passing. Passing and speed passing are performed 1-on-1 with Coach Fried making fundamental corrections to technique. Stick position, foot work and hand position is emphasized.
Attack players and defenders are broken out into their respective groups. Attack works on initiating their shooting from the top of the crease as well as behind. Quick releases and keeping the ball off the ground are emphasized while the defensive players' work on 1v1 fundamentals covering footwork and body positioning. When covering a ball carrier, breaking down correctly to control the attacker in order to dictate where the attacker can move is emphasized. Both groups receive detailed coaching and corrections to improve their technique.
As a team, the attack and defense practice man down. Beginning with 3v2 then building to a 4v3 and then 5v4 drills man down defense is covered in an active game speed drill. The players are coached to maintain pressure on the attacks hands at all times. This is the key to successfully defending against attackers and being able to dictate where the attack can go.
The 3v3 drill is used to help build communication between defenders so that they can effectively double the ball when the opportunity presents itself. Without good communication, it is almost impossible to correctly double the ball. When the 7v7 drill is finally started the players are able to combine everything they practiced in a game speed setting.
Additionally, in the Coma Drill, the defense works on defending against the attack coming from behind the goal line extended. Through a combination of using the two lowest defenders and the goalie, the defense works to force the attack to their week side while doubling the ball.
Riding Drills
Through white board instruction and live practice footage, Coach Fried presents the philosophy and instruction for his riding technique. In addition to lacrosse fundamentals, Fried demonstrates the following competitive techniques:

- Attack and Defense Split
- Transitional Passing
- Riding
- Full Field Scrimmage
The DVD begins with partner passing. Passing and speed passing are performed 1-on-1 with Coach Fried making fundamental corrections to technique. Stick position, foot work and hand position is emphasized. Players are shown why it is critical to have your hands and stick correctly positioned when passing. These techniques are reinforced during the speed passing drills.
Attack players and defenders are broken out into their respective groups. Coach Fried covers the defensive players' working on 1v1 fundamentals concerning footwork and body positioning. He emphasizes defensive fundamentals specific to covering the ball carrier, and breaking down correctly to control the attacker in order to dictate where the attacker can move.
The remainder of the DVD focuses on riding techniques. Coach Fried's philosophy is to make the other team work as hard as possible to clear the ball; it's not necessarily about causing a turnover.
Coach Fried's techniques can be tweaked to your team's strengths and needs. There are several ways to maximize the pressure placed on the clearing team. With Coach Fried's instruction, you will be able to force the other team to send the ball where you want it to be sent determined by how you set up your ride.
